Rakalj is situated on the eastern Istrian coast, on the western coast of the Rasa Bay. It's 12 km distant from Marcana and 30 km from Pula. For the first time Rakalj was mentioned in 1190. In the past it was famous for the traditional Istrian pottery which today inhabitants try to revive for tourist purposes. Other traditional occupations are seafaring and fishing. The major attraction for visitors is an ethnographic collection in the birth house of the scientist and writer Mijo Mirkovic – Mate Balota. To commemorate this great personality, every August in Rakalj takes place a gathering of poets and reciters called the Meetings on the Dear Stone, named after his poems collection. The inhabitants of Rakalj also cherish the Istrian folk music, especially playing the wind instruments rozenice and mih and dancing balun. As a historical heritage also is interested the parish church which rapresents a fine example of the 18th century Baroque architecture. The church has a stone tabernacle with relieves presenting two angels dates from 1425 and the altar from 1766. In 1312, for the first time was mentioned the Kastel Rakalj ( citadel ) which is a ruin today. In Rakalj you can enjoy in silence, sea and sun, far away from the rush. Approx. 3 km from Rakalj you can find small hidden beaches which offer you freedom and privacy.
