Guide for persons with disabilities coming to Istria

Guide for people with disabilities

Istria County, in collaboration with the Croatian Union of Associations of Persons with Disabilities, has published an Istria County Guide for Persons with Disabilities.
Istria County is sprinkled with numerous towns, municipalities and hills, which contain many cultural and historic monuments waiting for the moment when they will be noticed and when the stories of their creation will be told with pride. Hidden village streets, church façades and town gates demonstrate the splendour of the Istrian peninsula. In order to be able to enjoy this county's picturesque beauty, everyone needs to have safe and pleasant surroundings. For this reason Istria County, in collaboration with the Croatian Union of Associations of Persons with Disabilities - SOIH, has published an Istria County Guide for Persons with Disabilities, within the context of a programme of creating an environment adapted to environmental, aesthetic , economic, social and ecological values of the Istrian landscape.

The goal of Istria County Guide for Persons with Disabilities is to move the borders of inertia and provincialism in order to create a positive climate among all population structures and in all institutions.
Istria County is the second county in Croatia where a field study has been conducted, in ten towns and 31 municipalities.  A photographic account was prepared for each building and public space, and through an expert assessment they were given corresponding symbols - for accessibility, partial accessibility or inaccessibility.

It has been shown that a 60% of Istria County is accessible to persons with disabilities, proving that creation of these type of guides in different counties is an excellent base for developing a strategy of removing barriers and building an environment on a human scale.

Through this initiative, the accessible Istria County hopes to get persons with disabilities from all over the world interested in visiting it.
